Trial and Error Reading

Trial and Error Reading is a web-based platform designed to enhance cognitive abilities through the iterative decoding of encoded text. By manipulating text and applying transformations to it, the platform transforms reading into a challenging puzzle-solving exercise. This approach fosters skills such as pattern recognition, problem-solving, intuition, working memory, and language proficiency.

How to use it?

  1. Select Text: go to the Texts tab, click the Download button to fetch a random Wikipedia summary, or paste your text in the text area. Click Save.
  2. Customize Manipulations: In the Manipulations tab, adjust settings like skipping letters, shuffling words, or adding colors to make the text a puzzle. Start with simple options (e.g., 10% letter skip).
  3. Start Reading: Return to the main screen, click Start (or press Space) to display the manipulated text. Decode it by recognizing patterns and guessing words.
  4. Control Playback: Use Play/Pause (Space), Stop (S), or Rewind/Forward (←/→) to navigate. Adjust speed or font size if needed.
  5. Use Tools: Click Speak for text-to-speech, Search to find words, or Bookmarks to save progress.
  6. Track Progress: Check the Information tab for reports on your attempts and time spent.
  7. Experiment and Increase Difficulty: Try harder manipulations (e.g., ROT-N, false letters) and follow recommendations to improve skills.

Recommendations

  • Resist checking answers too soon: Avoid looking up the solution until you're certain you don't know a word or have spent enough time trying to figure it out.
  • Take breaks: Regular breaks can improve your problem-solving efficiency and keep your mind fresh.
  • Be patient with progress: Improvements may take months and depends on how often you train, as well as your diet and sleep quality.
  • Short sessions are key: Training twice a day in short bursts is more effective than one long session daily.
  • Quality over quantity: Fully solving a few sentences per day is better than partially solving many.
  • Challenge yourself: Solving without changing the text combination on the go (via "↻ Words ↻" button) is harder and more beneficial than adjusting it mid-session.
  • Increase difficulty: Continuously ramp up the exercise difficulty to maintain progress, rather than staying at an easy level for too long.
